The basic idea of maintaining a diet diary is to take note of all the things that you eat. It also helps to plan your meals. You can choose from amongst the various foodstuffs mentioned in the database.

Make sure that the foods you've chosen to eat provide you with all the essential nutrients required by the body. Also, keep a track of how many nutrients you are consuming on a daily basis. Through the diagram, you can also have a look at the way the energy is distributed. It is not mandatory to eat the food specified in the database. If you want to eat something outside the list of 6000 varied foodstuffs, you can add it to your food list.
