| It's common for racers to think that 100% throttle is the best way to get on the podium. Many racers think riding at the limit is going to make them the fastest and allow them to rip up the track and win races. You have to race at the limit, but not go all out - 110% - all the time. This mindset causes many drivers and riders to overdrive or over ride their equipment (you know...arm pump). In my work, this is trying too hard, which can lead to making more errors. For example, you may enter turn three breaking late, carry too much speed into the turn, and this causes you to miss your line - then you actually lose a couple tenths instead of gain a couple tenths. Ray Evernham, an all-star crew chief in NASCAR, says racers (and pit crews) need to slow down in order to speed up. What a different concept to the all-out, try 110% mindset. "To speed up, slow down. I still have to prove this principle to My drivers sometimes. I'll say, 'Go out and bust me a lap.' He'll drive the car hard, really work it. He'll mash the pedal on a straightaway, drive down into a corner, jam the brakes, turn the corner, and mash the pedal again. Then I'll say, 'Now take it easy, and drive a smooth lap.' And by letting the car do the work, he actually improves his time." ~Ray Evernham, 2005 Crew Chief Hall of Fame If you know my approach, I couldn't agree more. In order to get the most speed, you need to find a flow on the track. This should be a balance between effortless speed and finding a rhythm. You want to race your equipment to the limit, but with precision effortlessness, and free of tension. I help my students discover how to race on the edge and how to find effortless speed. To get to the podium quicker, I have many options to improve your mental game performance so you can find effortless speed. Contact me to get started today. Race to the Limit, Patrick J.
